Genetics Matter. Not all cows are created equal. Knowing that we do things a little “unconventionally” around here, we needed the right genetics to thrive in our environment. That’s where the South Poll comes in. The South Poll fits perfectly with our management style as they are able to thrive during the hot summers of the Southeast as we rotate them daily on fescue pastures.

South Polls are a cross between Red Angus, Hereford, Senepol, and Barzona. Through careful selection over the years the breed has been adapted to meet the needs of raising cattle in a grass based system in the Southeast. They are moderately framed, easy fleshing, and heat tolerant. This makes them the ideal breed for producing grass-fed and grass finished beef with no inputs other than grass, mineral, and the occasional hay.

We are active members of the South Poll Grass Cattle Association.

Key Traits:

• Fertility & Longevity: cows must produce a calf consistently to ensure a productive cow herd and earn her keep

• Moderate Frame & Easy Fleshing: efficiency for low input grazing management and grass only systems

• Heat Tolerance: slick hair coats, fly resistance, and red hides are ideal for the hot/humid regions

• Low Input: no supplemental feed or other inputs

• Maternal Instincts: moderate milking, great udders, and needs to raise her own calf

• Docility: calm disposition that are easy to work and a pleasure to be around
